Glen Scotia Icons of Cambpeltown No.1 “The Mermaid” 12 Year Old 54.7% 0.7l

The Mermaid opens a five-part series from Glen Scotia, the independent Campbeltown distillery whose recent investment in wood and maturation has brought a renewed vigour to its releases and returned the house to the attention of collectors worldwide. This expression is an unpeated 12 year old single malt finished in one of the rarest sherry casks available: Palo Cortado.

Palo Cortado begins life as an ultra-fine Fino before losing the layer of flor that shields it from oxidation. What emerges is dry and almond-like in the manner of an Amontillado, yet carries the weight of an Oloroso on the palate without its sweetness. The finish gives the whisky a nutty, saline, savoury profile in which the maritime character of the malt meets the almond notes of the sherry. For all the dryness of the cask, ample sweetness remains — candied tropical fruits, and a trace of oily Campbeltown funk on a thick, resinous close.
