Bladnoch 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 0.7L 46.7%

Our pick for November, and a wintry one. Fourteen years only in Oloroso sherry casks, each chosen by master distiller Dr Nick Savage — and it tastes like Christmas cake: raisins, orange peel, cinnamon and dark chocolate.

Bottled at 46.7%, natural colour, non-chill filtered. Bladnoch has since replaced the 14 with a 16 Year Old, so this bottling won’t be made again — once ours are gone, they’re gone.

Nose: wood spice, raisins and sultanas, orange peel, cocoa
Palate: dried fruit, rich fruitcake, cinnamon, chocolate
Finish: long and rich, slightly drying

Paul John Peated Select Cask Indian Single Malt 0.7L 55.5%

Our second pick is a curveball from Goa, India. Paul John makes it from barley peated with Scottish peat, matures it in ex-bourbon barrels and bottles it at full cask strength, 55.5%, without chill filtration.

Expect sweet smoke rather than an ashtray: brown sugar and earthy spice, a touch of tropical fruit, then cocoa and bitter marmalade at the end. A few drops of water open it right up.

Nose: smoke, brown sugar, earthy spice
Palate: sweet barbecue smoke, tropical fruit, warm spice
Finish: cocoa and bitter marmalade
