LOCH LOMOND DISTILLERY
A Storied Past:
The origins of the former Loch Lomond Distillery trace back to 1814, gracing the northern shores of Loch Lomond near Tarbet, or Tarbat as it was known. Regrettably, historical records from that era are scant, leaving the closure date of this early distillery veiled in uncertainty.
In 1965, a group associated with the Littlemill Distillery, situated a few miles up the road in Bowling, embarked on a new venture, giving rise to the contemporary Loch Lomond Distillery. This establishment would come to embody the essence of whisky craftsmanship.
Marriage of Heritage and Progress:
Loch Lomond Distillery pays homage to age-old traditions while embracing modern innovation to craft extraordinary spirits.
Distinctive Pot Malt Stills:
The distillery boasts distinctive pot malt stills characterized by their unique cylindrical necks and specialized distillation trays. This innovative design optimizes interaction with cooling alcohol vapors, significantly enhancing the process’s efficiency. The result: alcohol with an ABV potential of up to 90%, a notable increase from the typical 70%. This unconventional approach captures an array of “flavor notes” across varying alcohol strengths, a feat seldom achieved with conventional pot stills.
On-Site Cooperage:
A commitment to unwavering quality is exemplified by the distillery’s on-site cooperage. With a team of skilled coopers, meticulous barrel repairs and charring are executed to exacting standards, ensuring each cask nurtures Loch Lomond’s spirit to perfection.
Safeguarding Craftsmanship:
Respecting the time-honored craft of coopering, Loch Lomond Distillery proudly carries the torch, passing down the expertise to successive generations. The four-year apprenticeships provide budding coopers with the skills needed to preserve the cooperage’s legacy. Each year, around 10,000 barrels undergo substantial repairs, and an equivalent number are re-charred to rejuvenate the wood before welcoming new whisky.
Championing Innovation:
While heritage is a cornerstone, innovation finds a welcoming home. Loch Lomond Distillery was an early adopter of the re-char machine, a testament to its openness to novel ideas that elevate whisky craftsmanship.
Loch Lomond Distillery Today:
From its humble origins to its contemporary eminence, Loch Lomond Distillery’s journey is an integral part of its character. Enthusiasts are invited to partake in the legacy that thrives—a fusion of timeless artistry and bold innovation.
